Harry Reid – Demagogue

Harry Reid is the epitome of the word demagogue. Merriam-Webster defines demagogue as a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power. In a recent statement before the well of the Senate, Reid had this to say:

Harry Reid

“Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, ‘slow down, stop everything, let’s start over.’ If you think you’ve heard these same excuses before, you’re right. When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said ‘slow down, it’s too early, things aren’t bad enough.'”

“When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn’t quite right.” “When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today.”

It would serve Harry well to go back and re-read some history…

Democrats opposed Emancipation and such popular Republican legislation as the Homestead Act and support for higher education… — The Oxford Companion to United States History, 2001, Paul S. Boyer

And it was an  incumbent U.S. Senator that said this:

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side… Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. — Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944

Byrd a former member of the Ku Klux Klan was once elected Exalted Cyclops by his local chapter.

So if Harry Reid is reaaly looking to root out the party of racism, he needs only to look in the mirror. Need more proof, then I would suggest reading the following: Republicans Enacted Civil Rights
